European new car market August 2026: Estonia posts fastest growth in the EU

EU new car registrations reached 7.55 million in January to August 2026 (+5.3%), while Estonia grew 58.6%, the fastest rate of any EU country.
Battery-electric cars took 21.7% of new EU registrations, matching petrol cars for the first eight months. In August alone, the battery-electric share rose to 27.7%.
Estonia registered 13,071 new cars from January to August, 57% of them hybrids. The battery-electric share stood at 7.4%, almost three times below the EU average.

Toyota has revealed the GR GT, its new flagship a 650+ hp 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid, road-legal sports car following the 2000GT and LFA.
Gazoo Racing's new range-topper is positioned as a direct successor to the 1967 Toyota 2000GT and the 2010 Lexus LFA. Toyota describes it as a "road-legal race car" whose development was led by chairman Akio Toyoda (Master Driver Morizo) together with professional drivers.
The world premiere took place on 5 December 2025 in Tokyo, and the car made its public debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2026. In Europe, the GR GT ran uncamouflaged for the first time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2026. Series production is planned for around 2027.
27 years after its debut, the BMW X5 gets a fully electric version
