Toyota GR GT: 650+ hp twin-turbo V8, rear drive – the LFA successor is here

Toyota has revealed the GR GT, its new flagship a 650+ hp 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid, road-legal sports car following the 2000GT and LFA.

Gazoo Racing's new range-topper is positioned as a direct successor to the 1967 Toyota 2000GT and the 2010 Lexus LFA. Toyota describes it as a "road-legal race car" whose development was led by chairman Akio Toyoda (Master Driver Morizo) together with professional drivers.

The world premiere took place on 5 December 2025 in Tokyo, and the car made its public debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2026. In Europe, the GR GT ran uncamouflaged for the first time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2026. Series production is planned for around 2027.

Background and positioning

The GR GT is Gazoo Racing's new flagship and, according to Toyota, follows in the footsteps of the 1960s Toyota 2000GT and the Lexus LFA. The company links three cars the GR GT, the GR GT3 race version and the electric Lexus LFA Concept to the Japanese shrine-renewal tradition of "Shikinen Sengu", in which a shrine is rebuilt once a generation to pass craftsmanship on to the next. Toyota says the goal is to hand the skills of the engineers who developed the LFA down to a younger generation.

Development followed a "one-team" approach under Master Driver Morizo (Akio Toyoda). The team included professional drivers Hiroaki Ishiura, Tatsuya Kataoka and Naoya Gamou, gentleman driver Daisuke Toyoda and in-house evaluation drivers working alongside engineers. The guiding principle was "driver-first" development a constant dialogue between car and driver.

Powertrain

At its heart is an all-new 4.0-litre (3998 cc) twin-turbo V8 Toyota's first V8 fitted to a production car. It was engineered to be "thoroughly compact and light": bore and stroke are 87.5 × 83.1 mm, and the short stroke reduces engine height. It uses a hot-V layout with both turbos sitting between the cylinder banks, dry-sump lubrication and a thinner-than-usual oil pan all in service of a low centre of gravity.

Power reaches the rear transaxle via a carbon fibre torque tube. The transaxle integrates a motor-generator, an all new 8-speed automatic and a mechanical limited slip differential. The electric motor sits ahead of the transmission and fills the momentary torque gap during acceleration and gear changes. Toyota's targets are more than 650 hp of system output, over 850 Nm of torque and a top speed above 320 km/h.

Transmission and hybrid system

The new 8-speed automatic uses a wet-start clutch instead of a torque converter, and Toyota promises manual shift control even in automatic (D) mode plus "world-class" shift speed. To keep the wheelbase short, the rear transaxle uses a conical gear to reverse the direction of the power an unusual solution for a front engine, reardrive car, adapted from all-wheel-drive mechanisms. Careful placement of heavy components (battery, fuel tank) gives a 45:55 front-to-rear weight distribution.

Body, suspension and brakes

The GR GT gets Toyota's first all-aluminium body frame, using large aluminium castings in the main structure plus extrusions and new joining technologies. Body panels are aluminium and CFRP. The suspension is a new, low-mounted doublewishbone design with forged aluminium arms front and rear. Tyres are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 developed exclusively for the car, sized 265/35ZR20 front and 325/30ZR20 rear. Brakes are Brembo carbon-ceramic discs. The Vehicle Stability Control is multi-stage adjustable the same setup Toyota uses in its Nürburgring 24-hour race cars.

Aerodynamics: a reverse design process

With a top speed beyond 320 km/h, aerodynamics were among the most important requirements. Toyota reversed its usual process: the ideal aerodynamic form was defined first, and only then did designers shape the exterior around it. Aerodynamics engineers with WEC racing backgrounds worked as one team with the stylists.

Sound

According to Toyota, the aim was not only performance but also the distinctive "racing sound" of a twin-turbo V8. The exhaust system is engineered so the sound changes in sync with the state of the car, on both acceleration and deceleration.

Interior

The cabin prioritises driving position and visibility so the car suits both professional and gentleman drivers, and both track and everyday use. Driving-related switches are placed near the steering wheel and shaped for intuitive use. Special attention went to the gauges the width, height and position of the shift-up and gear-selection indicators were chosen through trial and error so they remain legible during circuit driving.

The GR GT3 race version

The GR GT3 is based on the GR GT and shares its core elements as well as much of the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8's components and the aluminium frame structure. It is, however, a purely track-focused FIA GT3-class race car for customers who want to win. The GR GT3 is slightly shorter (4785 mm), wider (2050 mm) and lower (1090 mm) than the GR GT. Toyota is also preparing a customer support system for racers.

When and where

The cars shown so far are, per Toyota, prototypes/development vehicles, and the specifications may still change. The GR GT had its European baptism in July 2026 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, running the hill climb uncamouflaged alongside the GR GT3. Also on display was Toyota's Le Mans-winning #7 TR010 HYBRID (Conway / Kobayashi / de Vries), which took Toyota's sixth outright Le Mans 24 Hours victory in 2026. Series production is targeted for around 2027; Toyota has not yet announced European pricing or exact on sale timing.

Summary

The GR GT is Toyota's clear bid to return to the top of serious sports cars for the first time since the Lexus LFA, the brand again has its own halo car built around a V8 and rear drive rather than an electrified SUV.

Technically, the choice of a front engine, a rear transaxle and a low centre of gravity is a classic sports-car recipe, which Toyota complements with a light hybrid and an aluminium frame.

As this is still a development car, the figures should be read as targets. If Toyota meets them, the GR GT will be a genuine rival to cars at the level of the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-AMG GT.
