Is it still a Jaguar? The Type 01 answers with 1,030 PS
Jaguar’s new Type 01 is an electric four-door GT with up to 1,030 PS that opens a new era for the brand and divides opinion before it even goes on sale.
The new model has no direct predecessor. The Type 01 is the production version of the Type 00 concept car shown in Miami in December 2024. Both the concept and the rebrand that preceded it drew heavy criticism, and many Jaguar fans are still asking whether this is really a Jaguar.
The Type 01 was unveiled in New York in October 2026. Jaguar plans to open orders in early 2027, with first customer deliveries in the second half of 2027. The car will be built in the UK.

Why the Type 01 divides opinion
The backlash began before anyone had even seen the Type 01. In November 2024 Jaguar replaced its logo and launched the “Copy Nothing” advertising campaign, which did not show a single car. A month later it unveiled the two-door Type 00 concept in Miami. Its bright pink paint and slab-sided shape drew heavy criticism on social media and in the press, and critics dubbed it “Barbie pink”.
Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover has acknowledged that the brand is prepared to lose most of its existing customers, expecting only around 15% of current buyers to follow it into the new era. In his view, great design always polarises, and the Type 00 was never meant to please everyone.
Ian Callum, who led Jaguar design from 1999 to 2019 and whose work includes the XF, XJ, XK and F-Type, is sceptical too. He has said the Type 00 concept, whose lines the Type 01 closely follows, is bold and dramatic, but that it is missing the one quality Jaguar design has always relied on: beauty. JLR chief creative officer Gerry McGovern, credited with the Type 00 design, left the company in March 2026.
It is worth remembering that Jaguar has been criticised for bold moves before. Callum’s own 2007 XF struck many people as too radical at the time, and Glover likes to point to the E-Type, which in the 1960s looked like a car from Mars.
The new JEA platform
The Type 01 is the first production car on Jaguar’s new electric platform, JEA (Jaguar Electric Architecture). According to Jaguar, nothing that already existed could deliver a car with four doors, more than 1,000 PS and a low, long-bonnet silhouette, so it developed an entirely new body architecture. The manufacturer says more than 360 patent applications were filed during the Type 01’s development.
Two common misconceptions:
- “It’s that pink concept car.” Not quite. The Type 00 shown in Miami was a two-door concept, while the Type 01 is its four-door production version with four individual seats.
- “The new Jaguar is just another electric crossover.” It isn’t. The Type 01 is a low-slung GT more than five metres long, in other words a large grand tourer.
The name is deliberate too. According to Jaguar, “Type” refers to the brand’s historic models, starting with the C-Type that won Le Mans in 1951, “0” stands for zero tailpipe emissions and “1” for the first car of a new generation.
Compared with Jaguar’s previous EV
Jaguar’s only previous electric car was the I-Pace, launched in 2018, which went out of production in 2024. It is not a direct predecessor of the new model, but the comparison shows how big a technical step the brand has taken.
| Spec | I-Pace → Type 01 |
|---|---|
| Body | SUV → four-door GT |
| Power | 400 → 1,030 PS |
| Torque | 696 → 1,365 Nm |
| 0–100 km/h | 4.8 → 3.2 s |
| Battery (usable) | 84.7 → 118 kWh |
| Voltage | approx. 400 → 850 V |
| Range (WLTP) | 470 → up to 720 km |
| Rapid charging (DC) | 100 → 350 kW |
| Drag coefficient | 0.29 → 0.23 |
| Built in | Austria → United Kingdom |
Powertrain
- Three electric motors, one on the front axle and two on the rear, with permanent all-wheel drive
- Up to 1,030 PS and up to 1,365 Nm of torque
- Active torque distribution between the wheels (Intelligent Torque Vectoring)
- All-wheel-drive control software and silicon carbide inverters tuned with know-how from Jaguar’s Formula E team, Jaguar TCS Racing
- Jaguar has not announced any other powertrain versions so far
British journalists who have driven prototypes say the power delivery is clearly rear-biased, so on the road the car feels closer to rear-wheel drive.
Performance
| Spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Power | 1,030 PS (approx. 758 kW) |
| Torque | 1,365 Nm |
| 0–100 km/h | 3.2 s |
| 100–180 km/h | 4.0 s |
| Weight distribution | 50:50 |
Jaguar says the Type 01 is the most powerful road car in the brand’s history. The previous record holder, the XE SV Project 8 unveiled in 2017, produced 600 PS and was built in a run of just 300 cars.
A 0–100 km/h time of 3.2 seconds is not a record among today’s electric cars with more than 1,000 PS. For a large GT, the 100–180 km/h time of 4.0 seconds says more, because that is the range in which you find out how much reserve there really is for overtaking.
Jaguar has not yet published the top speed or kerb weight. With a 118 kWh battery and a body more than five metres long, the Type 01 cannot be a light car, so much of the driving experience will depend on how the chassis is tuned.
Battery and charging
- 118 kWh usable capacity and an 850-volt electrical architecture
- WLTP range of up to 720 km (manufacturer’s estimate ahead of official certification)
- Up to 515 km at sustained motorway speeds, according to Jaguar
- Rapid charging at up to 350 kW, adding up to 321 km of range in 13 minutes
- Based on its customers’ driving data, Jaguar says this range would cover 99.7% of journeys without a charging stop
In Estonian conditions, especially in winter, the motorway figure is a better starting point than the WLTP number when estimating real-world range.
Chassis and aerodynamics
- 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution
- Twin-chamber air suspension and adaptive dampers
- Rear-wheel steering, which according to Auto Express gives the five-metre-plus car a turning circle similar to a Honda Civic’s
- 23-inch wheels
- Drag coefficient of 0.23, which Jaguar says is the best in the brand’s history
- Active Vanes and a rear spoiler that deploys in three stages
Jaguar says the car has two distinct characters: a big reserve of power on one side and refined comfort on the other.
Interior
- A central “spine” running the full length of the cabin divides it into four individual seats
- Longitudinal brass-effect anodised aluminium trim emphasises the length of the cabin
- A 24-inch OLED display under a single pane of glass ahead of the driver, which also runs Jaguar’s new infotainment system
- A 7-inch smartphone-style touchscreen between driver and front passenger for the most frequently used functions
- No rear window: the rear view comes from the digital ClearSight camera system, whose screen sits at the base of the windscreen, roughly level with the door mirrors
- Jaguar Immersive Sound system with a full-width Panoramic Soundbar and Sensory Audio seats; Jaguar says the soundbar is an automotive first
- Jaguar cites travertine stone and artisan textiles as inspiration for the materials and colours
When and where
- World premiere: New York, October 2026
- Orders: from early 2027, according to Jaguar’s plan
- First customer deliveries: second half of 2027
- Production: United Kingdom, at JLR’s Solihull plant
- Price: not officially announced. Italian business daily Il Sole 24 Ore estimates roughly €140,000 to over €170,000
- Estonian pricing and arrival date are not yet known
- On sale now: Jaguar listings on Autoportaal – including the electric I-Pace
On paper, the Type 01 is the most technically capable Jaguar ever made: 1,030 PS, up to 720 km of range, 350 kW charging and the best aerodynamics in the brand’s history.
It is the design that divides people. Anyone hoping for an elegant Jaguar in the spirit of the E-Type or XJ will be disappointed. Anyone who values a car that looks like nothing else will get exactly that. Jaguar has deliberately chosen a different path and accepted that not everyone will like it.
The final verdict will come from the price, the driving experience and the buyers. The stakes for Jaguar are exceptionally high: the F-Pace, the last car of the old line-up, went out of production in December 2025, and the Type 01 has to prove that the new direction will bring in new customers.
