BMW registered 94 new cars in Estonia in September, its best month of the year, and its sales over nine months have more than doubled year on year.

The September result beat the previous record month, August, by a quarter. The X3 was the best seller, and fully electric and plug-in hybrid models made up a significant share of the month's sales, Inchcape Motors Estonia announced.

According to AMTEL, the Estonian association of car dealers and service companies, 1,663 new passenger cars were registered in Estonia in September. That is 41 per cent more than a year earlier.

BMW sales have grown quickly this year. In August, 75 new BMWs were registered; in September, 94. In the first nine months of the year, 569 new BMWs were registered, compared with 265 a year earlier. The overall new-car market grew 56 per cent over the same period.

Buyers weigh running costs more carefully

According to Raido Lembit, head of premium brands at Inchcape Motors Estonia, buying behaviour has changed alongside the growth. Buyers now compare different models and powertrains at the same time and pay more attention to the costs of running a car.

"Alongside price, people are paying more and more attention to equipment, running costs and how well a car suits their everyday needs. The September sales figures show there are buyers for electric, plug-in hybrid and combustion-engine models alike," Lembit said.

X3 was the best seller

The best-selling model in September was the BMW X3. More than 30 were delivered to customers, nearly a third of the month's sales. Several X5, X6 and X7 models also went to new owners.

A quarter of sales were electrified

In September, 13 fully electric BMWs and 11 plug-in hybrids were delivered to customers, a quarter of the month's sales. Over nine months, 66 fully electric BMWs have been registered in Estonia, compared with 30 in the same period last year.

The new-generation iX3 has become a popular choice in Estonia. According to BMW Group, orders for the model in Europe are approaching 100,000, and since its launch this spring every third fully electric BMW ordered in Europe has been an iX3. In Estonia, 21 iX3s have been sold, 7 of them in September. The model is also a finalist in the Estonian Car of the Year 2027 competition.

The electric line-up is growing. The new fully electric BMW i3 is already on sale, and the fully electric version of the BMW X5 is expected to reach Estonia in December. According to Lembit, the wider range gives customers more options to find an electric car that suits their driving habits.

Autoportaal: what the numbers show

  • BMW's share of new passenger car sales in September was 5.7 per cent (94 of 1,663).
  • Fully electric cars made up 13.8 per cent of BMW's September sales, compared with 11.1 per cent across the market. BMW buyers choose an EV more often than the market average.
  • iX3 sales in Estonia mirror the European pattern. Of the 66 fully electric BMWs registered in nine months, 21, nearly a third, were iX3s.
  • Over nine months, BMW sales grew 115 per cent against 56 per cent for the market as a whole. BMW is growing more than twice as fast as the market.

Autoportaal: the iX3 in brief

The iX3 is BMW's first series-production model on the Neue Klasse platform. The platform is designed for electric cars, uses an 800-volt architecture and supports fast charging at up to 400 kW. The new i3 saloon uses the same technology.

Version Range (WLTP) Price in Germany
iX3 40 up to 635 km from €63,400
iX3 50 xDrive up to 805 km from €70,900

Estonian prices may differ from those in Germany.

EV share stays above a tenth

According to AMTEL, 186 new electric cars were registered in Estonia in September, 11.1 per cent of all new passenger cars sold that month. In August the share was 11.8 per cent, so EVs have made up more than a tenth of the market for the second month running. Over nine months, 1,158 new electric cars have been registered.

A Norstat survey commissioned by Inchcape Motors Estonia in June found that 27 per cent of Estonian drivers would consider an electric car for their next purchase. Among those planning to buy or lease a new car, the share was nearly a third.

"With electric cars, one of the biggest influences is personal experience. Once someone has been able to use an EV for a longer period and has seen how it fits their daily driving, charging options and costs, they become more willing to consider one as their next car," Lembit explained.

An M3 Competition also hit the road in September

The record month also brought some rarer BMWs onto Estonian roads. Among them, a 390 kW BMW M3 Competition was delivered to a new owner in September.
