BYD unveiled the seven-seat ATTO 8 electric SUV in Paris, with a battery that charges from 10 to 97% in 9 minutes at a FLASH Charging station.

The ATTO 8 is BYD's new flagship SUV for Europe and the first model to bring the second-generation Blade Battery and ultra-fast FLASH Charging to the European market. In China, the same car is sold as the Tang L.

The ATTO 8 goes on sale in Europe in the first quarter of 2027. Pricing and timing for Estonia have not yet been announced.

What is FLASH Charging?

FLASH Charging is BYD's new charging system, using chargers rated at up to 1,500 kW. According to BYD, the ATTO 8's battery goes from 10 to 70% in five minutes and to 97% in nine minutes. Even at temperatures as low as −30 °C, the manufacturer says charging from 20 to 97% takes about 12 minutes.

From a driver's point of view, this means roughly 100 kWh of energy flows into the battery in nine minutes. That works out to an average charging power of about 670 kW, and more than 800 kW during the first five minutes. That is several times what today's typical public fast chargers deliver.

It is important to note that these charging times apply only at BYD's own FLASH Charging stations. At a regular fast charger, the charging speed is limited by the charger's output. BYD plans to build 3,000 FLASH Charging stations in Europe by the end of 2027, but the press release does not say whether or when any will come to Estonia.

Drivetrains

  • Design RWD: rear-wheel drive, single electric motor, 340 kW (462 PS)
  • Excellence AWD: all-wheel drive, two electric motors, 570 kW (775 PS)

Performance

Version Power Range
Design RWD 340 kW 653 km
Excellence AWD 570 kW 602 km
Excellence AWD Value
Torque 775 Nm
0–100 km/h 4.6 s
Top speed 240 km/h

For a seven-seat family car more than five metres long, 4.6 seconds is very quick. BYD says the Excellence AWD is the most powerful seven-seat SUV in Europe. In everyday driving, what matters more is that the all-wheel-drive version's range is only 51 km shorter than the rear-wheel-drive model's.

Interior and equipment

  • 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster
  • 26-inch head-up display
  • 15.6-inch central touchscreen with Google Built-in
  • Front seats and outer second-row seats with heating, ventilation and massage
  • Three-zone climate control that also covers the third row

What does a full charge cost?

Charging from 10 to 97%, or about 100 kWh, costs around €11 at home overnight on spot-price electricity, based on the past 12 months of prices in Autoportaal's fuel cost calculator. At a public fast charger priced at 40 c/kWh, the same amount of energy costs about €40. To check whether an electric car would be cheaper than your current car, try the electric car comparison.

SHARK DMO is a plug-in hybrid pickup that made its EU debut in Paris. With two electric motors, it has a combined output of 436 PS, an electric range of up to 90 km and a combined range of up to 675 km. When and where

  • On sale in Europe from the first quarter of 2027
  • Pricing and timing for Estonia not yet announced
  • On sale now: BYD listings on Autoportaal, with the BYD Sealion 7 as the largest electric SUV available

The ATTO 8 is BYD's most ambitious family car in Europe yet: five metres long, seven seats and a large battery that promises more than 600 kilometres on a single charge.

The biggest news, however, is charging. A nearly full battery in nine minutes brings EV charging times close to refuelling, but only at BYD's own FLASH Charging stations.

That is why the ATTO 8's biggest advantage in Estonia depends on how quickly those stations arrive here. Until then, it will charge as fast as other electric cars with large batteries.
